Power System Studies – Principal/Senior Engineer

Kinectrics is looking for a Power System Studies – Principal/Senior Engineer for the Distribution and Asset Management service line in our Transmission & Distribution Technologies Division.
Must be willing and able to travel both nationally and internationally. Travel more than 50% of your time may be required for some durations.
A critical component of this role will be developing the growth strategy and leading the implementation of additional capacity and capability within the Power system Studies business. You will bring to this position a reputation as an industry expert in this subject area as well as both technical and leadership skills. Travel more than 50% of your time may be required for some durations.
Expand Kinectrics footprint by participating & presenting technical papers at conferences. Participation in various power studies committees is highly recommended and expected (IEEE, IEC, CIGRE etc.)
General Accountabilities
- Identify, nurture and secure work in consulting and engineering from new and existing customers in the area of power system studies. This may include single projects but also focus on negotiated master service agreements for baseload work. Split of work between securing (winning) power system studies work and execution estimated to be 70/30.
- Quote, plan and run projects including negotiation and administration of contracts, estimates of costs, scheduling and resource management.
- Execution of work assignments including analysis and engineering oversight, authoring or reviewing of reports
- Knowledge transfer and mentoring of junior engineers and staff
- Participate in workshops and conferences and present high-quality articles for presentation and publication.
- Be prepared to travel within Canada, the United States and elsewhere to complete projects.
- Maintain expertise in the field of transmission and distribution asset management specifically with transient, grid interconnection studies and NERC studies. Participate in national and international bodies focused on related areas.
Essential Competencies:
- Strong initiative to identify opportunities where Kinectrics engineering teams can contribute to power utility engineering, implement new business, and obtain revenue projects.
- Flexibility to work in a wide array of technical topics related to distribution engineering.
- Expertise and proven experience in performing transient power studies
- Proven experience performing connection impact assessments for interconnecting DER in North America – familiar with the standards and report requirements
- Experience with NERC studies such as MOD and PRC series is considered essential
- Strong customer focus and ability to successfully develop new business with Canadian and US power utilities and/or distribution companies
- Commitment to employer and companies’ strategic goals.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively as needed by the project.
- Ability to manage time and budgets on Kinectrics projects and to lead/work on multiple projects in parallel.
- Knowledge and experience in project management.
- Proven computer skills with a variety of software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, PSCAD, SKM and ETAP.
- Working experience with Siemens PSS/E
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:
- A four-year university education in electrical engineering plus a master’s or higher degree in Power System Engineering or related area.
- PE designation (multi-state preferred)
- Knowledge in areas of power system studies, distribution power systems analysis, connection impact assessments, short circuit, load flows, distribution load flow, loss analysis, protection coordination, arc flash, transient analysis, RTDS (closed loop testing), EMTP modelling, protection philosophy, P&C equipment and ideally substation design
- Knowledge of distribution & transmission standards: distribution system codes, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, etc.
- Knowledge of distributed energy resource interconnection requirements: IEEE 1547, Hydro One TIR.
- Knowledge in power industry design standards.
- Knowledge and experience with distribution components such as transformers, circuit breakers, fuses, arresters, switches, automation, insulated power cables, overhead line conductors and insulators.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently in the U.S. without the need for work sponsorship now or in the future.
- Eligible to work in Canada (Visa to be obtained with support from Kinectrics)
