The Opportunity
Kinectrics has a growing portfolio of services supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear power plants and lead the life extension projects of existing nuclear power plants in Canada and around the world. As part of our growing design team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the design of mechanical systems and/or components both in the traditional nuclear market, and in new initiatives to develop nuclear technology. The successful candidate will be working within a multi-discipline engineering team mainly supporting the design engineering team located in Durham Region. The role is within the OPG Site Engineering (Mech/Civil) section, which is focused on leading projects at various OPG sites, e.g. Pickering, Darlington, etc. The role will be engaged in either refurbishment projects and/or new build projects led by OPG site services team.
- Provide input and direction to the development of conceptual/detailed equipment designs as they progress through a structured design process
- Provide technical oversight and mentoring of more junior members of the Engineering team
- Perform Mechanical engineering analysis and/or reactor core design and analysis
- Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
- Provide field support to multi-disciplined plant design modifications, including provision of field engineering
- Understand and assess client problems and determine appropriate means of solution.
- Conduct technical assessments and emergent troubleshooting/engineering to support refurbishment projects and operating unit (capital) projects.
- Interface effectively with other staff on multi-disciplinary projects.
- Stay current with developments within their field of expertise.
- Occasional travel within the GTA may be required
- Other duties as assigned.
Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact
- Mechanical or Nuclear engineering activities including:
- Piping and process systems design, including preparation of system design specification, flow diagrams, piping isometric drawings.
- Preparation of equipment and components sizing calculations, technical specifications, and design drawings.
- Design of modular engineered systems including skid-type systems and components
- Vendor-interface and preparation of equipment & component specifications to facilitate procurement including selection of nuclear (Class 1/2/3) and conventional (Class 6) valves, flanges, fittings, pumps and heat exchangers.
- Design assistance with technical evaluations, independent third-party reviews, design walkdowns, system hydraulic calculations, component sizing calculations and HVAC flow balance calculations.
- Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, ASME Section III, Section VIII and/or B31.1, ASME Section III Appendix XXIII qualification is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of Nuclear Quality Assurance Standards such as N299 and CSA N286.
- Knowledge and experience working with nuclear power plant (e.g. OPG or Bruce Power) systems & processes, e.g.
Engineering Change Control is a must
- A Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Nuclear Engineering (or equivalent) is required.
- Candidates are expected to have or to pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation.
- Experience with Nuclear safety & licensing experience would be considered an asset
- Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of station customers.
- Assist in development of proposals and negotiation of contracts with clients
- Knowledge of Project management methodologies and processes is a must
- A period of 8+ years relevant nuclear experience is considered necessary.
- Currently approved Nuclear Security Clearance (e.g. OPG or Bruce Power) is an asset
