Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact
Kinectrics is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to deliver engineering expertise in support of power generation utilities and other clients, with a primary focus on CANDU nuclear power stations. This role is part of the Design & Engineering Services (DES) team and will primarily support a range of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Waste Management projects. This role involves providing mechanical engineering analysis, design, and field support across the full project lifecycle - from early conceptual engineering through detailed design, implementation, and close-out.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams, construction and procurement partners, and utility stakeholders to deliver practical, high-quality engineering solutions in a regulated nuclear environment.
To deliver mechanical engineering expertise to power generation utilities and other customers. The specific accountabilities of the position are as follows:
- Perform mechanical engineering analysis and design for Candu nuclear power stations.
- Interface with construction, procurement partners, and utility stakeholders throughout all phases of design projects, from conceptual and preliminary engineering through detailed design, implementation, and close-out.
- Provide field engineering support for multidisciplinary plant modifications, including on-site technical support as required.
- Understand, assess, and define client technical problems and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
- Conduct technical assessments and emergent troubleshooting/engineering to support refurbishment projects and operating unit (capital) projects.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers and specialists across multiple disciplines.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments, codes, standards, and best practices within the mechanical and nuclear engineering fields.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Need to Succeed
- Strong understanding of CANDU technology and nuclear power plant design and operation.
- A period of 5+ years or more is required to gain this experience.
- General knowledge of emerging SMRs, BWRs/PWRs and advanced reactors is considered an asset.
- Mechanical engineering experience in:
- Piping and process systems design, including system design specification, flow diagrams, and piping isometric drawings.
- Vendor interfacing and preparation of equipment and component specifications to support procurement, including nuclear (Class 1/2/3) and conventional (Class 6) components such as valves, pumps, heat exchangers, flanges, and fittings.
- Design support activities including technical evaluations, independent third-party reviews, design walkdowns, hydraulic and thermal calculations, component sizing, and HVAC flow balance calculations.
- Nuclear component and assembly design employing GD&T practices, 3D modeling tools, and best construction practices.
- Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, ASME Section III, Section VIII and B31.1. ASME Section III Appendix XXIII qualification is considered an asset.
- Experience in the use of piping and numerical analysis software such as AutoPipe, PIPESTRESS, CAESAR II, ANSYS (CFD & FEA) is considered a strong asset.
- Knowledge and implementation of client Engineering Change Control processes.
- Familiarity with Nuclear Quality Assurance Standards such as N299 and CSA N286
- Candidates are expected to have or to pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation.
This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
