About the Position
- Business Area: Transmission & Distribution Technologies (TDT)
- Department: Distribution Asset Management (DAM)
- Location: 800 Kipling Avenue, Toronto, ON - On-site
- Term Length: 8 months
- Salary: The hourly rate for this position is $20.78-$25.67 per hour. Please note, the salary information provided is intended to be used as a guideline. Final rate offered will vary upon candidate’s prior co-op/work experience, years of study completed, relevant skills, as well as internal equity considerations.
How You Will Make an Impact
This opportunity involves responsibilities including but not limited to:
- Hands-on assistance in advanced laboratory experiments including electrical R&D test protocol design, physical setup of laboratory samples and equipment, and diagnostic test execution for low and medium voltage power cable dielectric systems
- Undertaking collection, organization and statistical/graphical analysis of data for non-destructive examination (NDE) diagnostic assessment services
- Assist in designing and prototyping new testing technologies and methodologies to help improve the Kinectrics service offerings in cable non-destructive examination (NDE)
- Use, modify, or create computer programs for engineering test data acquisition, instrument automation, and data analysis, utilizing MATLAB 2017b or newer
- Assist in maintaining engineering records, updating operational instructions and technical procedures, and preparing technical condition assessment reports
- Work with engineers and technologists to resolve day-to-day project issues
- Other duties as required
What You Need to Succeed
- Currently enrolled full-time in a post-secondary, undergraduate Electrical, Materials, Nuclear, Chemical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics, or equivalent program requiring a co-op placement
- Undergraduate specialization requirement is flexible, as long as candidate has suitable interest / experience. Candidates should have interest / strong competencies in electrical power systems, electromagnetics, signal processing and mathematical programming. Interest in materials science (particularly dielectrics) is desirable
- Require good understanding of engineering mathematics, statistical analysis of large data sets and databases
- Strong research skills, including utilization of on-line and library-based research and journal databases
- Strong report writing skills, examples may be requested
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work co-operatively with a variety of multi-disciplinary staff including engineers, technologists and managers
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team situation
- High level of initiative
- Computer Skills:
- Scientific Graphing, Data Analysis and mathematical programming - knowledge and experience in MATLAB (version 2017b or equivalent) including advanced programming for data analysis and instrument control would be a strong advantage
- Microsoft Office - particularly Microsoft Excel, including Excel VBA
- AutoCAD – Experience drafting technical drawings for engineering review is a plus
- Altium designer or equivalent– Experience designing/prototyping circuit boards is a plus
- Basic understanding of workplace safety, health & environmental hazards and mitigation (i.e. electrical safety, WHMIS, personal protection etc.) is preferred, however at minimum a willingness to be trained and follow established safety procedures for hands-on tasks is required.
