Position Overview

The Transmission and Distribution Technology (TDT) Business is seeking a highly skilled, senior High Voltage Engineer. The successful candidate will have a track record of advanced technical knowledge in High Voltage Engineering, with experience in leading specialty laboratory testing projects and campaigns for extra high voltage (EHV), high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) assets. The technical lead role focuses on advanced testing and diagnostics of line hardware, insulators, underground & submarine power cables, bushings, transformers, and switchgear.

In this key role, the successful candidate will drive the development and execution of sophisticated high voltage testing procedures, ensuring high-quality testing services that enhance the reliability and stability of power systems worldwide. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make significant contributions to advancing high voltage technology and delivering top-quality results in a specialized and evolving field.

 

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

 

  • Provide technical and analytical expertise for multiple projects of varying complexity and ensure High Voltage Laboratory project work is completed on schedule and on budget.
  • Work independently and as an integral part of the High Voltage Laboratory (HVL) engineering team with a primary focus on delivering technical testing services to external clients and secondary focus on delivering internal support to internal engineering teams as well as sales and marketing.
  • Determine how High Voltage Laboratory will be employed to meet clients need, and develop test circuits, setups and test pans to satisfy testing criteria.
  • Provide expertise on the key laboratory components (HV test transformers, measuring instruments and control systems) and ensure the effective and safe operation of the High Voltage Laboratory.
  • Work with technical teams to provide guidance, instruction, and mentoring in areas of electrical engineering and technology required to setup and operate the HVL.
  • Provide technical expertise in areas such as Corona & RIV testing, Insulators, Arresters, Bushings, HV Cables and Accessories.
  • Lead the work of technical staff on common projects, ensuring tasks are delegated appropriately to meet project requirements.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers from various disciplines and labs on consulting projects, acting as the HVL expert and primary liaison for all HV related matters.
  • Conduct test data analysis, interpretation and modeling; prepare and/or review High Voltage Laboratory test reports and engineering studies.
  • Identify sales leads and work with the sales team in planning, follow- through and closing contracts.  Write quotations and proposals, prepare bid packages and deliver sales and technical presentations. Build relationships with current and potential new customers.
  • Engage with clients and ensure customer satisfaction by adhering to Kinectric’s high-quality standards and safety practices in all aspects of the work performed.
  • Organize the ongoing maintenance and upgrades to the components of the High Voltage Laboratories to ensure sustainment of valuable Kinectrics’ asset.  Introduce innovations to the lab’s equipment, data acquisition, and monitoring systems.
  • Continuously innovate to strengthen the services, products, technology and skills within the High Voltage Lab Service Line offering.
  • Maintain expertise in the field of high voltage lab testing. Active participation in national and international committees is expected for continued development of knowledge.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

What You Need to Succeed

 

Essential Competencies:

  • Proficient in handling a wide array of technical topics related to High Voltage engineering.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team setting alongside technical and engineering staff.
  • Excellent technical presentation skills, effectively articulating technical terms to both highly technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong customer focus and broad experience for successfully developing new service offerings. Initiative to propose and implement new business ideas related to High Voltage Testing.
  • Must be willing and able to travel both nationally and internationally.
  • Considerable knowledge and experience in project management in order to effectively and rapidly coordinate and mentor other staff in order to integrate multidisciplinary activities. 
  • Experience working in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 17025 is an asset.
  • Develop test plans, procedures, and test schedules while ensuring efficient use of laboratory resources.
  • Ability to manage time and work on multiple projects in parallel with the capability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, clearing bottlenecks and within project constraints (time, cost, quality). Flexibility to meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience training staff in various work methods and conducting detailed safety reviews.

 

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

  • A four-year university education in Electrical Engineering is a minimum requirement. A Master's degree or additional post-graduate qualifications in a relevant field are considered an asset, as is equivalent experience
  • Requires advanced knowledge of electrical theory; especially fundamental electrical, science and physics theory that can be practically applied to high voltage laboratory testing settings.
  • Knowledge of Transmission and Distribution delivery industry and key markets.
  • It is expected that a minimum of 7 years working experience with electrical testing, particularly with High (or Extra High) Voltage, would be required to gain the expertise required for this position. Experience with HVL testing with emphasis on T&D products (Insulators, Arresters, Overhead Conductors, MV/HV Cables, Switchgear & Transformers, etc.).  
  • Proficient in data acquisition, analysis and modeling software programs, experience with power system analysis software is considered an asset.
  • Proven track record wit project management and familiarity with key project management methodologies.
  • Expert trouble-shooting skills and familiarity with failure investigation methods are required.
  • Recognition by the industry as High Voltage technical expert is preferred and can be demonstrated by leadership roles or active involvement in industry committees, publications etc.
  • Experience with writing technical reports, writing Standards, writing Industry peer- reviewed Papers and Articles, producing failure investigations, procedures and specifications, engineering studies, developing training material and conducting courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in the role of “consultant engineer” with a demonstrated ability to secure work.
  • Practical experience in the physical construction of test rigs and fixtures is a valuable skill.
