Kinectrics is searching for an intermediate level technologist to join the Experimental Development and Application (EDA) service line, in the Materials and Major Components (MMC) Department. The main responsibility is to perform experimental programs to conduct or direct investigations and technical studies often of a complex nature in one or more technical disciplines with a significant degree of independence. This may include leading/supervising others on various phases of projects and dealing with customers to solve problems, responding to inquiries and maintaining good relations. A strong technical background is required in order to be rapidly brought up to performance standards in a number of areas. Work may be conducted in conventional laboratories, Zone 3 radioactive materials laboratories, and hot cell facilities in Canada or worldwide equipped to handle ex-service irradiated CANDU pressure tubes

Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

• Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures.
• Conduct investigations and technical studies related to mechanical, fracture, and corrosion testing on zirconium alloys and other materials in accordance with established procedures.
• Prepare test specimens for testing, including hydriding, preparing machining drawings, and measuring specimen dimensions.
• Set up existing test equipment and data acquisition/control systems to perform required testing.
• Design, fabricate, and maintain complex equipment, processes, systems and development of test methods.
• Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained in accordance with quality requirements and help to maintain a safe, well-organized work environment.
• Perform post-test metallurgical examinations of tested samples.
• Maintain records of experimental work as per quality assurance requirements.
• Analyze experimental data to assist professional staff in preparing technical reports.
• Prepare routine and non-technical reports.
• Interact with supervisory and support staff to ensure that work is completed on schedule and to the required quality standards.
• Interact with customers and perform off-site work at utility customer sites.
• Lead/supervise smaller projects or phases of major projects.
• Occasionally supervise, train, and co-ordinate the work of others including safety.
• Directly respond to customer inquiries, maintain good customer relations and solve problems.
• Ensure customer satisfaction by following good quality and safety practices in all aspects of work performed.
• Must be able to travel to customer site, shift work may be required.
• Perform other duties as required.

What You Need to Succeed

• Proven experience of mechatronics.
• Proven experience in the preparation of drawings using SolidWorks or other relevant 3D CAD software.
• Demonstrated computer skills for data acquisition and analysis.
• Understanding of the mechanics of materials.
• Experience with metallurgical heat treating, chemical handling (WHMIS) and working with high temperature or pressurized systems is considered an asset.
• Requires a good knowledge of machining equipment and common machining processes such as turning, boring, milling, drilling, reaming, tapping.
• Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with colleagues and customers, technical report preparation, development of laboratory and testing procedures, reporting of testing results, etc.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills to receive and provide information to customers.
• Ability to carry out and document test programs in accordance with established procedures.
• Knowledge and experience with work procedures in licensed radiological facilities is an asset.
• Knowledge and experience with work procedures in nuclear generating stations is an asset.
• Knowledge and experience working with zirconium alloys is considered an asset.
• Knowledge and experience working with radioactive material is considered an asset.
• A period of 8 years related education and experience is considered necessary to gain the required skills/experience.
