Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact:

 

Conduct materials investigations/testing and technical studies in one or more technical disciplines with some degree of independence. The degree of independence will vary based on experience. This may include a limited amount of dealing with customers to solve problems, responding to inquiries and maintaining good relations. A strong technical background is required in order to be rapidly brought up to performance standards in a number of areas. This assignment will be in the Materials and Major Components Department. Work may be conducted in conventional laboratories, Zone 3 radioactive materials laboratories and/or hot cell facilities equipped to handle ex-service irradiated pressure tubes.

 

  • Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures.
  • Conduct mechanical and failure testing programs on metallic components and other materials using computer-controlled servo-hydraulic test machines, autoclaves or other equipment in accordance with established procedures.
  • Connect data acquisition and monitoring instrumentation to test specimens.
  • Perform post-test metallurgical/materials examinations or failure examinations of samples in the laboratory. 
  • Assist in the development of test methods, techniques and equipment.
  • Analyse experimental data to assist professional staff in preparing technical reports.  
  • Interact with supervisory and support staff to ensure that work is completed on schedule and to the required quality standards. 
  • Maintain records of experimental work as per quality assurance requirements.
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained and help to maintain a safe, well-organized work environment. 
  • Interact with customers and perform off-site work at utility customer sites (local and international travel may be required).
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by following good quality and safety practices in all aspects of work performed.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

What You Need to Succeed:

 

  • Requires good knowledge of mechanical and/or materials testing and metallographic preparation of metals
  • Basic knowledge of machining tools and common machining processes
  • Demonstrated computer skills for data acquisition and analysis.
  • Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with colleagues and customers.  Some minor technical report preparation may be required such as development of laboratory and testing procedures, reporting of testing results, etc.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills to receive and provide information to customers.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the mechanics of materials.
  • Basic knowledge of instrumentation and electronics.
  • Ability to carry out and document test programs in accordance with established procedures.
  • Basic knowledge and experience in the preparation of drawings using CAD software.
  • Experience with metallurgical heat treating, chemical handling (WHMIS) and working with high temperature or pressurized systems is considered an asset. 
  • Experience with welding is considered an asset
  • Knowledge and experience with work procedures in licensed radiological facilities is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with work procedures in nuclear generating stations is an asset.
  • A period of up to 5 years’ related experience or equivalent advanced education is considered necessary to gain this experience
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired by successful completion of grade 12 in a secondary, commercial or technical school or equivalent plus 3 years of concentrated study in Metallurgy/ Metallurgical/Welding Engineering Technology or Materials Science or equivalent engineering technology program at a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College.
