Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

 

  • Perform process engineering activities supporting engineering projects involving fusion energy, tritium management, isotope processing and separation technologies, advanced nuclear technologies, and related research, development, demonstration, and commercial deployment programs, while ensuring compliance with applicable safety, environmental, quality, regulatory, and customer requirements.
  • Develop Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and detailed engineering deliverables including process design descriptions, requirements, Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), control philosophies, interlock logic, technical specifications, operating procedures, and engineering reports.
  • Perform process modelling, simulation, heat and mass balance calculations, equipment/pipe/instrumentation sizing, and system performance evaluations for fusion fuel cycle, tritium, isotope processing, gas handling, vacuum design, purification, and balance-of-plant systems.
  • Support the design, development, testing, and deployment of process systems, skids, pilot plants, test facilities, experimental apparatus, and integrated process equipment for fusion, advanced nuclear, and clean energy applications including first-of-a-kind (FOAK) technologies.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & controls, manufacturing, project management, QA/QC, procurement, scientific, and nuclear engineering personnel to develop innovative and practical engineering solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, process hazard analyses (PHA), Layer of Protection Analyses (LOPA), safety assessments, risk evaluations, and constructability reviews to ensure designs meet safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and execute test plans, commissioning procedures, factory acceptance tests (FAT), startup programs, operational readiness reviews, troubleshooting, and performance validation activities, including support for testing and deployment at customer, supplier, manufacturing, and research facilities in Canada and internationally.
  • Support equipment/part procurement and supplier management activities, including equipment selection, technical evaluations, acceptance testing, and reviews of equipment designs, layouts, and fabrication drawings.
  • Support technology development activities including R&D programs, engineering studies, technical evaluations, pilot-scale demonstrations, technology maturation initiatives, proposal development, and technical reporting.
  • Support the development of 2D and 3D equipment, process skid, and facility models to facilitate design reviews, fabrication, assembly, and testing.
  • Interface with customers, suppliers, research organizations, universities, contractors, and international fusion and nuclear partners; represent Kinectrics at technical meetings, industry forums, and conferences.
  • Support project execution activities including scope definition, cost estimating, scheduling, progress tracking, contract administration, and technical risk management.
  • Stay current with emerging fusion technologies, isotope management practices, advanced manufacturing methods, and process engineering innovations.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously and provide technical support to project managers, technical leads, department management, and other stakeholders as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

What You Need to Succeed

 

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
  • 5+ years of process engineering experience in fusion, nuclear, energy, chemical processing, manufacturing, or related industries.
  • Strong knowledge of process engineering fundamentals, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, transport phenomena, unit operations, chemical reaction engineering, and process control
  • Demonstrated experience preparing process engineering deliverables, including PFDs, P&IDs, process calculations, equipment specifications, engineering reports, commissioning documentation, and design basis documents.
  • Experience with process simulation, modelling, and engineering software tools such as Aspen HYSYS, Aspen Plus, AutoCAD, or equivalent applications. Experience with programming and technical computing tools such as Python, MATLAB, VBA, C#, or similar platforms is considered an asset.
  • Experience with process system design, process skids, integrated equipment packages, commissioning activities, startup testing, and performance validation programs.
  • Knowledge of fusion fuel cycle technologies, tritium processing and detritiation systems, hydrogen isotope separation, gas handling and vacuum systems, cryogenic processes, purification technologies, thermal diffusion, tritium monitoring technologies, and related nuclear process equipment.
  • Understanding of fusion energy systems, tritium management technologies, plasma support systems, fuel cycle requirements, or emerging fusion reactor concepts is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), including participation in PHA, LOPA, hazard reviews, engineering risk assessments, and nuclear safety evaluations.
  • Familiarity with applicable engineering codes and standards including ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, and nuclear quality assurance requirements.
  • Experience managing suppliers and supporting the design, fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, and delivery of engineered equipment and systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project execution skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated customer focus and ability to deliver engineering projects and research programs on schedule and within budget.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams in a dynamic project environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

 

 

Assets

  • Experience with research and development facilities, pilot-scale systems, demonstration facilities, or first-of-a-kind (FOAK) technology projects.
  • Familiarity with tritium technologies such as CECE, LPCE, ADS, WDS, HPS, ISS, CDS, or similar isotope-processing systems.
  • Experience with gas separation technologies, cryogenic distillation, thermal diffusion, membrane separation, adsorption processes, or tritium monitoring systems.
  • Knowledge of CANDU technology, nuclear systems, or nuclear facility operations.
  • Graduate degree (M.Eng., MASc, MSc, or PhD) in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a related discipline.

 

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
