Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact
Technical Leadership and Operations:
- Lead and oversee analytical chemistry work in support of commercial laboratory services, with a focus on quality, safety, and client responsiveness.
- Provide technical expertise in method development, validation, and troubleshooting for a variety of chemical analyses used in nuclear and industrial applications.
- Support special R&D and investigation projects requiring advanced or non-routine analytical techniques.
- Oversee daily laboratory operations, ensuring safe work practices, efficient workflows, optimized instrument utilization, and adherence to client deadlines.
- Supervise and mentor laboratory staff as required, fostering a culture of performance, safety, and continuous learning.
- Maintain and enhance technical procedures, lab infrastructure, and instrumentation in alignment with ISO 17025 and internal quality systems.

- Uphold and improve laboratory quality assurance programs to meet ISO 17025 and client regulatory requirements.

- Ensure accuracy, reliability, and traceability of data through rigorous documentation, review, and continuous improvement practices
Customer and Business Focus
- Act as a key technical liaison to internal and external clients, providing consultation, analytical insights, and responsive support.
- Deliver high-quality reports, interpretations, and recommendations that align with client expectations and business objectives.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to expand commercial services, including new capabilities, industries, or customer segments.
- Work with business development and leadership teams to build client relationships and contribute to proposals, bids, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Monitor market trends and emerging analytical needs, positioning the lab to respond with innovative solutions.
Operational Excellence and Innovation

- Drive improvements in lab throughput, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness through lean practices, workflow optimization, and technology integration.
- Lead or contribute to initiatives aimed at automating routine testing, improving sample handling, and reducing turnaround times without compromising safety or quality.
- Stay current on developments in analytical chemistry, integrating relevant advancements to enhance the lab’s capabilities and competitiveness.
What You Need to Succeed
Essential Competencies
- Demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry within a commercial laboratory environment, with a focus on operational performance and client delivery.
- Strong foundation in general chemistry principles and techniques, with working knowledge of both inorganic and organic chemistry.
- Hands-on experience with a wide range of analytical instrumentation and techniques, including gas chromatography (GC), ion chromatography (IC), inductively coupled plasma techniques (ICP-OES and ICP-MS), as well as classical wet chemistry methods such as titration, gravimetric analysis, and spectrophotometry. Demonstrated ability to apply these methods to complex sample matrices with a focus on accuracy, reliability, and efficiency.
- Proven ability to develop and validate analytical methods, troubleshoot complex issues, and support technical decision-making.
- Deep commitment to laboratory safety, including experience promoting and maintaining safe work environments.
- Results-oriented mindset with a focus on process efficiency, customer satisfaction, and technical quality.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with clients and cross-functional teams.
- Leadership skills with experience mentoring or supervising technical staff in a high-performance setting.
Desirable (Asset) Experience
- Familiarity with radiochemistry, radiation detection methods (e.g., gamma spectrometry, LSC), or radiation protection practices.
- Understanding of quality and regulatory frameworks used in the nuclear industry (e.g., 10CFR50 Appendix B, CSA N286).
- Exposure to chemistry support for nuclear power plants, particularly CANDU station chemistry.
Education and Experience
- Master’s or PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related scientific discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in a commercial or applied laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated experience in laboratory operations, technical leadership, or method development preferred.
