Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

Kinectrics is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer to support and grow its power transformer services business across Canada. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in transformer testing, diagnostics, condition assessment, maintenance, life extension, troubleshooting, and forensic investigations. This role combines engineering consulting, field service support, project leadership, customer engagement, and business development activities. The position will provide technical leadership for transformer testing and diagnostics programs involving power transformers, bushings, tap changers, and associated auxiliary equipment. Working alongside field crews, laboratory personnel, and subject matter experts, the successful candidate will develop test plans, oversee execution of specialized diagnostic testing, analyze results, investigate equipment failures, and provide engineering recommendations to support safe and reliable asset operation.

General Accountabilities

• Act as a technical and project leader for assignments involving power transformers, including bushings, transformer cores, windings, oil and paper insulation systems, tap changers, cooling systems, monitoring devices, and associated diagnostic technologies.
• Lead consulting, laboratory, field testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and asset assessment projects related to transmission and distribution power transformers.
• Plan, supervise, and execute transformer oil sampling, dissolved gas analysis programs, oil quality assessments, oil processing and reclamation activities, and transformer dry out projects. Analyze test data and field results to evaluate insulation health,       identify emerging concerns, and develop corrective action recommendations.
• Perform condition assessments and develop recommendations regarding maintenance, refurbishment, replacement, ratings, loading capability, and life extension of power transformers.
• Participate in transformer failure investigations and forensic engineering assignments to determine root causes of equipment failures and service interruptions.
• Work collaboratively with forensic engineers, test specialists, field personnel, metallurgists, chemists, and other subject matter experts on multidisciplinary investigations.
• Review operating history, maintenance records, test results, inspection findings, event data, and physical evidence to identify contributing factors and failure mechanisms.
• Prepare technical reports, expert engineering opinions, forensic investigation reports, and corrective action recommendations supported by sound engineering judgment.
• Develop proposals, technical scopes of work, project schedules, cost estimates, and resource plans for transformer engineering and testing assignments.
• Present technical solutions and recommendations to customers and support proposal development, contract negotiations, and business development activities.
• Lead project teams and provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, technologists, and field service personnel.
• Support the development of new transformer service offerings, diagnostic methodologies, asset management solutions, and forensic engineering capabilities.
• Participate in customer meetings, technical workshops, conferences, and industry working groups to support Kinectrics' reputation as a leader in transformer services.
• Maintain expertise through continual professional development and participation in organizations such as IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE
• Travel within Canada, the United States, and internationally as required to support field testing, inspections, investigations, and client engagements.

What You Need to Succeed

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline.
• Professional Engineer designation in Canada or eligibility to obtain registration.
• Minimum of eight years of relevant experience in power transformers, power systems, high voltage equipment, or related engineering services.
• Demonstrated experience leading field and laboratory projects involving transformer testing, diagnostics, inspection, condition assessment, oil analysis, troubleshooting, failure investigations, maintenance planning, refurbishment, ratings assessments, and life extension studies.
• Experience leading engineering, consulting, commissioning, testing, or asset reliability projects.
• Experience performing equipment failure investigations, root cause analysis, forensic engineering assessments, or asset reliability studies is strongly preferred.
• Strong understanding of transformer components including windings, cores, bushings, insulation systems, cooling systems, tap changers, and monitoring equipment.
• Ability to interpret dissolved gas analysis results, dielectric test data, insulation assessments, electrical test results, thermal performance data, and condition monitoring information.
• Experience preparing technical reports, investigation findings, engineering recommendations, and client presentations.
• General knowledge of transmission and distribution substations and related high voltage equipment including circuit breakers, cables, surge arresters, instrument transformers, and protection systems.
• Familiarity with applicable IEEE, IEC, CIGRE, CSA, and industry standards related to transformers and high voltage equipment.
• Strong project management, proposal development, technical writing, and customer relationship skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with electric utilities, industrial facilities, renewable energy operators, transformer manufacturers, testing service providers, or consulting organizations.
• Experience presenting technical papers, delivering technical training, or participating in industry conferences.
• Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, High Voltage Engineering, Power Systems, Asset Management, or a related discipline.
• Participation in IEEE, CIGRE, IEC, or other industry technical committees.

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
