Kinectrics has a growing portfolio of services supporting the development and deployment of new nuclear power plants in Canada and around the world. This includes Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Advanced Reactors of all technology types, as well as emerging nuclear technologies such as: nuclear fuel cycle facilities, and integrated modules to aid in the deployment of such technologies. Additionally, the market continues to grow for highly integrated clean energy technologies which use a nuclear reactor as a heat source such as high temperature hydrogen production cycles, process heating loads, desalination, synthetic fuels and materials production, district heating, etc.
A newly formed section, Advanced Reactor Design, has been established to lead this exciting new area of growth for Kinectrics. This section is a design hub for all SMR, Advanced Reactor, and New Build services within Kinectrics and works in a highly collaborative manner with all service lines of the company. This section will lead the reactor design services for SMRs, Advanced Reactors & related technologies, which include system reactor core design, process/hydraulic design, advanced electrical, I&C design, and the associated application of SMR-related design codes & standards.
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Provide input and direction to the development of conceptual/detailed equipment designs as they progress through a structured design process
- Provide technical oversight and mentoring of more junior members of the Engineering team
- Provide a high level of expertise in one or more specific areas related to electrical/I&C engineering, e.g., control instrumentation assessment/design/specification of equipment and components, electrical power generation and distribution.
- Strong knowledge of control system design, analysis and equipment including control computers, PID controllers, Digital Control System (DCS), Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), advanced control theory etc.
- Interface with construction/procurement partners and utility stakeholders, throughout the lifecycle of the design project (i.e., from preliminary and conceptual engineering to detailed design, implementation and close-out) to provide practical and effective solutions as per requirements.
- Understand and assess client problems and determine appropriate means of solution.
- Interface effectively with other staff on multi-disciplinary projects.
- Stay current with developments within their field of expertise.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Electrical/I&C Engineering (or equivalent) is required.
- A period of 8+ years relevant experience is considered necessary.
- New build design or SMR design experience is considered a strong asset
- Experience with Nuclear safety & licensing experience would be considered an asset
- Experience in control system theory, analysis and design is required
- Assist in development of proposals and negotiation of contracts with clients
- In depth knowledge and experience of use of appropriate nuclear codes and standards
- Candidates are expected to have or to pursue attainment of the P.Eng. designation.
- Good time management skills and demonstrated capability to interface effectively with and gain the trust of station customers.
- Effective project management skills are an asset
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements in other countries is an asset.
