Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

 

  • Provide senior mechanical engineering leadership for the design, fabrication, procurement, integration, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of nuclear equipment, skid-based process systems, fusion fuel-cycle equipment.
  • Act as technical lead and accountable engineer for assigned mechanical scopes, including design basis development, technical decision-making, design verification, supplier technical oversight, and resolution of engineering issues.
  • Prepare, review, and approve design packages which may include fabrication drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams, design calculations, general arrangement drawings, detailed fabrication drawings, technical specifications, bills of material, failure mode and effects analyses, test plans, and procurement documentation.
  • Perform and oversee mechanical design tasks, including equipment sizing and selection for pumps, tanks, vessels, heat exchangers, recombiners, distillation columns, dryers, humidifiers, valves, piping, supports, and related process equipment.
  • Generate, review, and direct CAD models and drawings using accepted engineering and drafting practices. Working knowledge of drafting software such as SolidWorks, or equivalent tools is required.
  • Lead functional testing, factory acceptance testing, commissioning support, field issue resolution, and engineering investigations in accordance with Kinectrics quality program requirements.
  • Provide technical direction to engineers, designers, analysts, suppliers, and fabrication partners while retaining individual contributor responsibility for complex design, analysis, review, and problem-solving tasks.
  • Interface with clients, utilities, constructors, procurement partners, suppliers, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, from concept development through detailed design, fabrication, installation, testing, and close-out.
  • Integrate mechanical designs with process, instrumentation and controls, electrical, software, safety, licensing, and quality requirements to provide complete engineered solutions.
  • Support fusion energy and tritium fuel-cycle projects involving containment, transfer, separation, detritiation, purification, storage, handling, and monitoring systems where mechanical design interfaces with process and nuclear safety requirements.
  • Lead technical reviews, design risk assessments, constructability reviews, supplier document reviews, and acceptance of fabrication, assembly, inspection, leak testing, and test procedures.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through clear technical communication, timely issue resolution, disciplined project controls, and practical engineering judgement.
  • Support proposal development, estimates, technical approaches, basis of estimate preparation, and customer-facing technical content for internal and external opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary team situations with clients, suppliers, fabrication partners, construction partners, and internal stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or work packages of varying complexity while maintaining technical accuracy and clear priorities.
  • High initiative in identifying technical risks, proposing practical solutions, resolving design issues, and improving engineering methods.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical report writing, design review presentation, supplier correspondence, and customer-facing technical discussion.
  • Proven skills with engineering and project tools including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, CAD software, and calculation or analysis tools relevant to mechanical equipment design.

 

Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:

 

  • Minimum 8+ years of relevant engineering experience in mechanical design, fabrication, procurement, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, or project execution for complex equipment or process systems.
  • Practical experience with nuclear equipment, skid-based process systems, custom mechanical equipment, pressure-boundary components, process piping, containment systems, or equipment used in radioactive or hazardous service.
  • Experience with fusion energy systems, tritium fuel-cycle systems, detritiation, isotope separation, gas handling, purification, storage, or related process equipment is considered a strong asset.
  • Knowledge and interpretation of Canadian Nuclear Standards and other national or international standards applicable to mechanical equipment, pressure equipment, process systems, testing, and nuclear quality programs.
  • Knowledge of nuclear quality program requirements, quality assurance practices, design verification, supplier quality surveillance, inspection, and acceptance testing.
  • Strong understanding and commitment to human performance principles, with nuclear station, nuclear laboratory, or nuclear supplier experience preferred.
  • Experience acting as a lead, responsible engineer, design authority delegate, reviewer, approver, or accountable engineer for mechanical engineering work packages is required.
  • Must have excellent communications, technical report writing, design documentation, and oral presentation skills.
  • A four-year university degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent is required; chemical, nuclear, or related engineering background may be considered where supported by relevant mechanical systems experience.
  • Professional Engineer of Ontario designation, or eligibility for Professional Engineers Ontario registration, is required.
  • Ability to successfully obtain and maintain nuclear site security clearance.
  • Travel to site(s) may be required

 

This role requires the successful candidate to complete the security clearance process. The security clearance process is conducted in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and may take up to 12 months to complete.
