The Opportunity

  • Department: Nuclear Safety & Licensing
  • Location: Pickering, ON

Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) is a systematic study of failure modes and probabilities for complex engineered systems, used to assesses the likelihood and the magnitude of adverse outcomes.  As applied in the nuclear power industry, PRA is the study of the likelihood of combinations of failure events in the control and safety systems of the nuclear power plant that can result in sequences of events that lead to damage of the reactor fuel and the potential for radioactive releases to the environment.

This opportunity involves responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Assisting in the collection and interpretation of operational data to establish the frequency of adverse initiating events at nuclear power plants
  • Updating and modification of existing fault-tree models for nuclear power plant systems to incorporate modifications to the system design, new operating configurations, or new data from operating experience
  • Creation and or management of database systems to house and process data sets used in various PRA analyses, including potential for some development of coding for data management and processing
  • Assisting in establishing routes for control and power cables for safety systems through nuclear power plants
  • Assisting in project management tasks including project planning, tracking and status reporting
  • General support for PRA Analysts including:
    • Double-checking calculations
    • Editing/Preparation of report content

During the co-op term, the PRA Support Analyst will gain exposure to:

  • CANDU reactor design and operating practices
  • Principles of Probabilistic Risk Assessment
  • Practical application of probability theory
  • Management of large data sets
  • Project management of medium to large size projects

The Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled full-time in a post-secondary Computer Science, Chemical, Mechanical, Materials, Electrical, Civil or Nuclear Engineering, Engineering Science, Physics, Mathematics, or equivalent program requiring a co-op placement
  • Sound fundamental knowledge of engineering and/or science principles
  • Strong problem-solving skills and aptitude in project management
  • Excellent written and oral communication, time management, and interpersonal skills

Strong understanding of the following will also be an asset, but not mandatory, to be involved with other high-profile projects and initiatives:
